Assigned Reading

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed Nemat's blog post "Secondhand Bookseller". Call me a little crazy if you please. It was a very detailed story. I felt as if I were in it. I mean, even the littlest things were detailed. For example, her pencil box had a blue top and a magnetic clip that made a sound every time you closed it. I feel like her just having dialogue with the man in the bookstore showed how extremely important he was to her. My favorite thing was how detailed she got about the bookstore. It actually made me think about the Walden's that was around here. The dimmed lights, which I think is terrible (makes it harder to read), and the books in piles everywhere. That's the one thing I LOVE about bookstores. Speaking of bookstores, I went to Barnes & Nobles down in the Easton Mall this weekend. My friend and I spent over an hour in there just absorbing the amount of books there were.
There were a few things I did not like or did not understand. One thing I did not like was how she talked about her father. I honestly felt it was irrelevant. She went from talking about her grandpa to talking about her father.I also do not understand why she told us about getting arrested at the age of sixteen. Was it because she had read too much when she was little and it expanded her intelligence farther than her own good? That part confused me a little. Though, other than those few things I really did enjoy this little story/blog.

  2. I absolutely did not like Alison Bechdel's "The Canary-Colored Caravan of Death". I did not know how to follow it. I was not sure which time frame she was in. It was very unclear. Then the comic pieces went in a funny order on the page. I just guessed which way to go and hoped for the best! Did her father die because of suicide or did he die from an accident? If you look during the funeral it says he killed himself in her thought. Though, if you look further down the page it said in the obituary that he died due to several injuries from a tractor trailer on Route 150. That part was hard for me to read and keep going. I just wanted to cry because I am still dealing with the loss of a friend to uncontrollable death because we did not see that he was unhappy. I would be upset if i were stuck in a town where I do not like it. I am upset that I am still here. I wanted to leave a long time ago. This place is a dead end. Bechdel uses extremely large vocabulary for a comic strip writer. Her audience may not have a large vocabulary. For example, what in the world is crepuscular? She did not think of her audience well, in my opinion. I think she should have put the book into more of a flowing way that way I might have been able to understand it a little more. She also really needed to dumb down the vocabulary!

  3. Oh, Juno. I absolutely used to love that movie! There are so many things that could picture exactly what scene it was because i have watched it so much when it first came out. I do believe that the writer of the evaluation gave a little too much away though. Somethings within the evaluation i agree with. for example i agree that the Diablo Cody used such simple words when things were the most complicated and complicated dialog when things are not so complicated. I do slightly disagree with how this movie is portrayed but that could be the bias part of me. Being a teenager it is not the morning sickness and being uncomfortable that is the worse thing, it is the not being accepted by others. Teenagers do not want to be talked about behind their backs. also another hard part of teenage pregnancy is telling the parents. I know when I was growing up my mother told me if I ever came home pregnant I would be kicked out. Having your parents no longer want you around because of a mistake is hard. When you go and talk to a teenager who is pregnant, at least in my school, all you hear about is how telling the parents was hard, or how the father no longer wants to be a part of their life, or the gender of the child. You may hear once and a while that the morning sickness or the cravings are unbelievable. but not as much. But from an older viewer perspective who has little to no expierence with pregnant teenagers I can see where you would think that not showing the signs ( i learned the difference between signs and symptoms in anatomy last week) of pregnancy would make you seem cool. Juno only seems cool because she got passed the most important things.

  4. BLAH! I do not even like the 007 movies, why would i like the review. it does not grab my attention. maybe it is because i really do not have any clue what is going on. twenty-two of them? really? it keeps going on and on about the babes, weapons, etc. How is this part of an evaluation? Why in the world brought into the thing? I am asking lots of questions, my bad. i just do not understand that thing whatsoever. I did not see a good or a bad just a bunch of decribing. That could be because i do not feel good and i am irritable therefore i really do not want to read. Now i have lost where i was going with this... But yes, where is the good plus bad thesis. plot describing is all I saw. That article made me want to not watch the James Bond movies ever. I really do not know what to write about. I just did not like that. I need two hundred and fifty words. I have never had this problem before. What a great night to not feel like writing, right!? Yeah. I am too irritable to figure out more.

    1. Amber, I understand how you feel about reading 007. I found that it was also hard to understand but I did take the time to reread it several times to better understand it. Scott did use some pretty big words in his review and I feel that not just anyone could sit down and read it and be able to understand it. What I had found that Scott was doing was acually comparing 007 to other James Bonds movies that have been around. I have actually seen some of the James Bonds movies and enjoyed watching them. Yes, they usuallly do contain evil genius's, beautiful woman, he's usually driving exotic cars, and weapons are included. That is what makes the movies so intertaining.

Scott does do alot of judgement in his review but he has evidence to back it up. I also think that Scott was using his own personal opinion and was just telling us how he did not like the film compared to other James Bond films. He kept using the word "I" alot making it seem like he was giving only his opinion and not the all around overview. Myself, I think that they should of included other critics reviews also, or at least one other one along with Scotts. I also think that if they would of explained to us more about how the title pertains to the movie, we would of understood it more better.

Scott went on to say that the song was a good song on paper and than goes on to tell us who sang it. This almost tells me that he doesn't like it or thinks maby the song does not relate to the movie, but thats my opinion.

When I read the review I was wondering if the role that Daniel Craig is playing as James Bond is going to be as good as the original James Bond from the first movies that came out. They make it sound like to me that this new character playing Bond is not going to be as brutal, and the mood is more grim and downcast, which sounds like to me he didnt show enough tough emotions like the real James Bond.

Overall I thought it was a good evaluation but they needed to elaborate on the title more, and also just looking at the new character of James Bond makes me think hes not fit for the film, but thats my opinion. I would have to go watch the movie but this one I have no interest in watching.

  5. Well, this is all about numbers. I am a number fan. Unless my head hurts then get it away from me. This article was easy to read I finished it before High school classes started today, went to blog on it when it was fresh in my mind, blogger is blocked. GREAT! Oh well. I agree, numbers do attract people. I am one who falls for this. Just not with magazines, they are a waste of time and money. Pintrest on the other hand "101 ways to say money." Heck yeah I am going to read it! I used to get free magazines and those lists were the only thing i looked at thinking one day i'll be more stylish, what was I thinking? there was a quote in there saying "the bigger the better." They are right. I want more for my money. I got a free subscription for a year from Value City (yeah, a long time ago) for Teen Vogue. Their magazines were huge! kept me entertained. If it is not numbers or gossip, a female normally does not want to read it. Men normally want the sex appeal or how to lose weight. oh Facebook distracted me. Facebook is now a word recognized by google+... strange world we have now a days. But yes, I really did like the article, I understood it (yay stupid terms!) and most of all it was easy to read. It flowed nicely. That is all. Good bye!

    1. Amber, I totally agree with you about the article being easy to read and well written. I enjoyed the article very much also. After I read this article it all made sense to me. All the magazines that I subscribe to have big, bold, flashy numbers. The numbers are what catches my eyes first but their is also the cover. Who wants to buy a magazine with a dull cover, not me. My opinion is, the cover and the nembers add to the credibility and this is what puts interest to the magazine, and that is what sells. I liked it that Katharine used a lot of different examples to prove her point and not just give her overall opinion. She gaave a lot of points that I never truly thought about. Yea sure the number things was always my first thing to read, for examples, "19 Secret Beauty Shortcuts", "50 Things That Keep A Man Hooked On You", "28 lazy ways to a healthy body, "7 Things He's Not Telling You", which brings it all back to the article relating to what it sayes about odd numbers that seem to be more believable. These heading were taken out of Redbook just to let everyone know. Most of the magazines that I have contain mostly odd numbers. But I also think that they use verbs to make the reader think they will learn or do something new. For instance new updates, tips or where to find something.

I think thats funny when you said that the quote in the article sayes "the bigger the better". Maby in some instances but what I think, in my opinion is, that what they are talking about is the different fonts and sizes along with the image that playes a big role in the cover and this determines what is going to sell. It's what is going to hook a readers interest lol, this will keep the readers subscribing to their magazines. It all has to do with marketiing.

I agree with you on the numbers or gossip is what will draw attention to a woman into reading something, but I also think woman read the articles in magazines for weight loss tips, relationships or other topics that will assure us that someone is out their to help us on these issues, we like to be taken care of and if magazines can promise this on the covers than we are more acceptable to buying them. I think men are into the sex appeal, weight loss tips also. Other things I think they take into consideration are, compared to the Mens Fitness Magazines I have are: 3 new ways to great sex, 6 secrets for six-pack abs, 59 ways to feel your best. My husband is also into birds and they have hints to help birds and such.

I am really glad you enjoyed this article has much as I did. Everything in the article seemed to be actual facts and not just opinion based.

  6. Eh.. I really did not like the evaluation. It just seems to drag on and on and on. That's one thing I hate about evaluations sometimes they go on. I do not care for the more than two things comparing. It took forever to read. It was sucky. Pardon the language. But blah. I hate it. It really just too long to read through. I really do not care about soap. I feel like something else would have been better. Magazines in general make females feel like they need to be pretty to snag a man. Personality is what snags a man. People are perfect just the way you are do not listen to anyone no matter how many times people say you need to.
